I resided once in a land where deep discussions by sanctioned thinkers were the rule; any non-conformist penning their thoughts risked being labelled a graphomaniac. Czesław Miłosz, a companion in this shared history, remarked in his book The Captive Mind: "It is impossible to communicate to people who have not experienced it the undefinable menace of total rationalism."
