Yes and... no. Although the awkward name that has little to do with engineering (it was coined by engineers who naturally have a bias to describe their actions in terms they find familiar), prompting is a form of elicitation and truth discovery dating back to Socrates (who left no written legacy by his own hand), though perhaps all the way back to the origins of language itself. With LLMs we are deconstructing (or reverse engineering 😉) the very essence of what it means for humans to dwell in language. Language-based AI appears to be an attempt to reverse the curse of the ambition of ancient Babylonian engineers... and that is truly exciting not just for coders and math champions!
