Perhaps a metaphor for the "male loneliness epidemic" apparently gripping the US? Much easier to talk about it without the gravity pointing towards its down-to-earth causes... men, alone, isolated, looking at life though a tiny hole, from behind thick glass, with too much time on their hands and ultra fast internet connection... ha!
