The field of computing has seen tremendous advancements recently. From ubiquitous computing to social computing, each advancement brings with it new requirements that computing systems strive to meet. One such requirement that has gained importance in recent years is the ability of computing systems to anticipate user requirements. This is where anticipatory systems come into play and where Artificial Intelligence (AI) gets to shine.

AI has become an integral part of modern technology, from personal assistants like Siri and Alexa to self-driving cars and advanced robots. AI strives to replicate human intelligence in artefacts that utilize digital computing machinery. Anticipation occupies a special role in AI, as it involves multiple, interdependent processes of predictive modeling. Some of these processes occur on the side of the designer at design time, while others take place within the artefact itself at runtime.

According to Mu-Yen Chen, an expert in Engineering Science, anticipatory computing is “a topic related to applications developed and able to anticipate specific user requirements. It is also utilized together with novel applications to perform an action in anticipation of a question of the user or to send a suggestion to the user.”
