Unpacking the Pandemic’s Impact on Remote Work: A Systematic Literature Review

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many organizations to adopt remote working arrangements to remain productive. While the shift towards remote work has been effective in the short run, it has also impacted employees’ well-being and productivity. A recent systematic review, “Consequences of COVID-19 on Employees in Remote Working: Challenges, Risks and Opportunities,” analyzed whether and how the shift towards remote or home-working impacted employees’ productivity, performance, and well-being.

The review, which included 67 peer-reviewed papers published from 2020 to 2022, found that remote working arrangements, workplace and organizational factors, and employees’ individual traits and skills impacted employees’ productivity and well-being. The review also provides a description of the organizational enforcement actions reported in the literature.

The sudden shift to remote work has generated a new workplace panorama, and it is unlikely that the previous organizational assets will be restored due to the substantial changes that the pandemic has promoted.
