Copyright Challenge in the Age of AI
How Latest Technology is Changing the Copyright Game
“How can we assign copyright when the true author is a machine?” — Ryan Abbott, Professor of Law and Health Sciences at the University of Surrey.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized the way we live and work, and copyright law has not been immune to its impact. The rapid development of AI technology has created new challenges for copyright law, including questions around ownership and authorship, fair use, and the role of human creativity in the digital age.
Ownership and Authorship
One of the most significant challenges posed by AI is determining who owns the copyright in works created by machines. While traditional copyright law grants ownership to the human creators of a work, the question becomes more complex when a machine is involved in the creative process.
Some scholars argue that, since machines lack the creativity and intentionality of human creators, they should not be considered authors and therefore should not be entitled to copyright protection. However, others argue that machines can produce creative works, and that the law should evolve to reflect this reality.
