AI to the Rescue: ChatGPT’s Role in Mental Health Detection
Exploring the potential of language models in identifying stress, depression, and suicide risk in social media posts
With over a billion people worldwide suffering from mental health issues, timely diagnosis and intervention are crucial. One way to detect an individual’s mental health state is by analyzing their social media posts. In this blog, we delve into the evaluation of ChatGPT, a large language model (LLM), for three mental health detection tasks: stress detection, depression detection, and suicide risk detection.
The Study
The paper “Evaluation of ChatGPT for NLP-based Mental Health Applications” by Bishal Lamichhane examines the performance of ChatGPT in classifying social media posts into different mental health categories. Here’s a breakdown of the methods used:
Three datasets were used for evaluation:
- Stress Detection Dataset
- Depression Detection Dataset
- Suicide Risk Detection Dataset
ChatGPT was evaluated for zero-shot classification accuracy in each of these tasks.
